Galantis Reimagines Bassline Hit “Do You Mind”

Galantis, the dance music project from Christian Karlsson, is back today with “Do You Mind” – a new single and visualiser out now via Ninja Tune’s Counter Records. The track arrives alongside the announcement of The Devil’s Tax Return: Volume 1, his new EP set for release on October 16.

The EP title is Karlsson’s wink at the audience, acknowledging the need for something new while entertaining within the familiar. “Do You Mind” follows “Stay Alive,” released in May, and marks the second release in this new era for Galantis.

“Do You Mind” sees Galantis breathe new life into Paleface ft. Kyla’s 2007 UK bassline/R&B classic. Propelled into the mainstream by Crazy Cousinz’s legendary 2009 remix before reaching a global audience through Drake’s 2016 smash “One Dance,” the track is now enjoying a new resurgence, once again proving its timeless appeal and its enduring influence on dance music culture.

“Some records feel untouchable because they already captured a moment so perfectly. ‘Do You Mind’ is one of those tracks. Instead of trying to completely reinvent it, I wanted to celebrate what made it so special while giving it a new life. It’s a record I’ve loved for years and I like the idea of taking care of the music that we already know and love. I want my kids and their generation to know these songs. It’s important not to forget all the beauty in music that we’ve had.” -Christian “Bloodshy” Karlsson.

Drawn to the raw emotion of Kyla’s melody and vocal, Karlsson approached the rework with deep respect for the original, crafting an entirely new production that honours its legacy while opening the door to a fresh listening experience.

Beyond “Do You Mind” and “Stay Alive,” Volume 1 of The Devil’s Tax Return encompasses other reimagined takes on works from a wide span of artists from Frankie Valli and The Killers to Feist and War On Drugs. These were the songs that soundtracked Karlsson’s life when he started Miike Snow, the indie-dance trio known for platinum records “Animal” and “Genghis Khan.” Each selection represents a freedom of expression he was tasting for the first time and a challenge to the formulaic song structures expected from his litany of pop radio hits he co-produced prior to Miike Snow under his Bloodshy moniker alongside Avant (Pontus Winnberg), notably the GRAMMY Award winning “Toxic” (‘Best Dance Recording”), “Piece of Me” and “Radar” for Britney Spears as well as works for Madonna and Katy Perry just to name a few.

Across these releases, Karlsson revisits some of his favourite songs from different eras and genres, stripping each one back to its emotional core before rebuilding it in his own voice. Rather than simply updating familiar classics, he uses them as a starting point for something new, an approach that reflects a belief he’s carried throughout his career: the records that endure are the ones that dare to take creative risks.
